Getting started[edit]
Account creation[edit]
- Primary article: Account
Players must first choose which platform to create their Guild Wars 2 account on, which then locks them into purchasing all content from the same platform. For instance, purchasing an expansion through Steam will only apply to a Steam Guild Wars 2 account and not to an ArenaNet or Epic Games Guild Wars 2 account. Refer to the main account page for differences between all platforms.
All newly-created accounts are free accounts, which can then be upgraded to a full account with the purchase of any expansion. Free accounts can play the entirety of the base game for free but with several limitations, including chat and Trading Post restrictions.
Note: Players can link their Guild Wars Reforged account with their Guild Wars 2 account if purchased through the same platform. No account linkage exists for Epic Games accounts. This linkage grants access to the Hall of Monuments rewards in Guild Wars 2 based on achievement progress in Guild Wars Reforged and Eye of the North. Refer to the Reforged FAQ for additional guidance on account linkage.
Installation[edit]
- Primary article: Running the game
The game is launched through the same platform the account was created through. Afterwards, the entirety of the game (including all DLC) will be downloaded. Players are able to enter the game once a minimum threshold of files have been downloaded.
Notes for Steam/Epic Games users:
- Launching the game through the platform launcher automatically creates and logs into a Steam or Epic Games Guild Wars 2 account, respectively.
- Both platforms may have an older launcher build; thus, additional files may be downloaded upon launching the game.
- A launch option command can be used to log into an ArenaNet Guild Wars 2 accounts through Steam/Epic Games; however, the most common danger is purchasing non-refundable content for the wrong account. ArenaNet Guild Wars 2 accounts must purchase from the ArenaNet store and approved retailers. This option should be used with caution, especially if returning from a hiatus.
World selection[edit]
- Primary article: World
Players can select their home world upon logging into the game for the first time. With the releases of the megaserver and World Restructuring systems, the only impact of world selection is the server region.
All players from the same region (EU or NA) are able to play together, regardless of home world selection. Furthermore, World versus World matchmaking is now based on the player's nominated guild instead of their home world. Server region transfers generally cost or are free for ArenaNet Partners.

First steps in Tyria[edit]
- Primary article: Character creation
Players must first create their character before they can enter Tyria:
- Race determines starting zone, racial skill, and character model and voice. Racial skills are insignificant and should not be a deciding factor. Race-specific dialogue may also appear, with
sylvari players having the most significant changes. - Professions determine equippable weapons and armor class, which may affect fashion choices. They also each have a unique mechanic, which can later change depending on which elite specialization is active.
- Physical appearance has no impact because all players have the same hitbox size. Appearance can later be changed using Self-Style Hair Kits, Total Makeover Kits, or Permanent Self-Style Hair Kits.
- Different backgrounds can influence some story arcs during the base game. However, all players will experience the same overarching story. Background-specific dialogue may occasionally appear.
- Character names must follow the Guild Wars 2 Code of Conduct to be approved, or not subject to a forced name change at any point.
Players are then loaded into their race-specific starting area within an instanced tutorial zone, where they are introduced to basic game controls.
What do I do now?[edit]
Story mission are unlocked every 10 levels. There are enough hero points to unlock all specializations, which is a requirement to use elite specializations. Expansion zones give 10 hero points per hero challenge.
Max level is 80.
Everything provides experience. Players can complete objectives within the Character Adventure Guide for experience.
Gear is quickly replaced. Focus on stat combinations. Berserker gear preferred for direct damage.
