The Dragon Crystal is a crystal full of Zhaitan's corruptive energy. Necromancer Rissa broke pieces of the crystal and made amulets out of the shards, selling them to various people across Tyria. Those who remained near the amulets long enough would slowly be turned into Risen without killing them, turning living flesh into rotten and driving the wearer insane and possessive in the process. In addition, these amulets attracted nearby Risen to them, making the wearer see the Risen as "friends" of theirs, and resulting in the Risen being drawn as far as Ascalon. The longer an amulet would stay in place, the larger horde of Risen would be attracted to them. This in turn made wearers of the amulets to function similarly to lesser dragon champions, leading the attracted Risen into various assaults on local settlements and forts, even while still alive.
Rissa's use these amulets had attracted the attention of both the Orders and the Inquest, who performed various experiments on the amulets. Amulets were known to be sold to Klaes, Sagum the Foul, Harriden the Cursed, and Howl the Brazen among many others.
The Dragon Crystal's presence itself also attracted many Risen into The Lawen Ponds, infesting the swamp with Zhaitan's minions.
