Installation notes
Current installed extensions should be checked for available updates to ensure compatibility with MW 1.19. Extensions with known updates include:
In order to better secure user passwords, the configuration setting $wgSecureLogin = true; should be included in LocalSettings.php.
Reason for request
Current version, 1.16, will soon have support dropped from many popular extensions, and is already unsupported by most Semantic MediaWiki extensions. In order to make the least amount of work, MW should be upgraded before installing SMW.
Newer versions of MW include numerous improvements, bugfixes, and new features, including the ResourceLoader framework, which uses the jQuery library to make the wiki overall more efficient.
What else uses it
Core Wikimedia Foundation sites (actually, they just moved forward to a special version of 1.20, which won't see public release for a while).
Possible pitfalls
Breaking compatibility with custom extensions, custom skins, and site .css/.js.
