The [[Wizard's Court]] is a group of powerful [[magic]]-users that has existed since the previous [[dragonrise]]. They live in [[the Wizard's Tower]] and [[Amnytas]] in the skies above [[Tyria (world)|Tyria]], though both have been moved around over the millennia. They make use of various structures and facilities known as bastions and [[Beacon (Wizard's Court)|beacons]], such as the [[Bastion of the Penitent]] or the [[Beacon of Ages]].<ref>[[Deimos (plaque)]]</ref><ref name="HellBreaksLoose">[[Hell Breaks Loose]]</ref> The Bastions in Amnytas are named after different schools of thought regarding [[magic]]—the Natural, Strength, Balance, Knowledge, the Celestial, and the Obscure.<ref name="Preview">[https://www.mmorpg.com/previews/preview-without-dragons-guild-wars-2-secrets-of-the-obscure-enters-a-new-era-2000128698 Preview: Without Dragons, Guild Wars 2 Secrets of the Obscure Enters A New Era], MMORPG.com</ref>

Led by the ancient [[Seer]] [[Isgarren]], the Wizard's Court is primarily focused on defending the world of Tyria from threats external of Tyria, having decided (though with much internal debate) to ignore internal plights and conflicts such as the [[Elder Dragon]]s. Despite this, the Wizard's Court has collected many powerful and dangerous relics from across Tyria, to safeguard them from those who would abuse their power, and has hidden them away in [[Wizard's Vault|their vault]].

To become a member of the Wizard's Court, one must first be innately talented in magic, and then undergo an ancient Seer ritual called divcia nava, or [[Ascension (Wizard's Court)|Ascension]] in modern tongue.<ref>[[Mabon's Journal (Item)]]</ref><ref>[[Seer Curses and Rituals]]</ref> This ascension is not like the [[Ascension]] tied to [[Augury Rock]], which merely unlocks one's true potential and is said to allow communication with the [[Six Human Gods]], but instead connects the would-be Wizard to the flow of the world's magic.

== History ==
=== The Founding ===
The Wizard's Court was founded by the [[seer]] [[Isgarren]] during the previous [[dragonrise]]. After the elder races' failed attempt to slay [[Zhaitan]], Isgarren parted from the seer fhogos<ref>[[Isgarren]]</ref> and started to build [[the World Spire]], a structure that would power a shield that would guard Tyria from the Mists.<ref name="HellBreaksLoose"/> He also made use of existing [[Beacon (Wizard's Court)|beacons]]<ref>[[Mabon]]</ref> such as the [[Beacon of Ages]] and [[the Wizard's Tower]] as conduits to help power the shield.

The court's first recruit was the [[mursaat]] [[Mabon]],<ref>[["An Unofficial History of the Wizard's Court, Volume 2" by A. Hawthorn]]</ref> who Isgarren met during the seer-mursaat conflict. The two clashed before Mabon admitted defeat, but after a quick exchange in which Mabon professed shame for his people's actions, Isgarren spared him<ref>[[Into the Obscure]]</ref> and later ascended him through the seer ritual of [[Ascension (Wizard's Court)|divcia nava]]. Mabon joined Isgarren to live at the Wizard's Tower and the two continued to work on building the spire.<ref>[[Aging Journal Entry]]</ref>

Before his departure from his kin, Isgarren encountered a [[kodan]] named [[Waiting Sorrow]] who was on the verge of [[Rage of Koda|Koda's rage]]. Seeing her struggle, Isgarren ascended her to sever her connection with [[Koda]], saving her life.<ref>[[Borrowed Journal]]</ref> After her ascension, Waiting Sorrow roamed the world for a time until the kodan migrated south under [[Jormag]]'s influence and she took refuge with the [[forgotten]] [[Vass]], whom Isgarren was courting at the time.<ref name="StrengthoftheUnseen">[[Strength of the Unseen (achievement)|Strength of the Unseen]]</ref> These two eventually ascended and joined the court.

When tracing the migrations south caused by Jormag's champion, Mabon and Waiting Sorrow found a female [[jotun]] named [[Dagda]] who was ill-treated by her tribe for her magic talents. They rescued her from the situation, and Dagda became Waiting Sorrow's apprentice before ascending and joining the court as well.<ref name="HeavyBook">[[Heavy Book]]</ref>

At some point, the [[djinn]] [[Akeem]] ascended and joined the court.

The Wizard's Court built [[Amnytas]] as a hub of research<ref>[[Mabon's Fate]]</ref> and a vessel to protect Tyria.<ref>[[Amnytas (achievements)|Amnytas mastery achievement discription]]</ref> They established six bastions, each representing a school of magic and led by a specific wizard. Waiting Sorrow built the defenses of Amnytas.<ref>[[Sorrow in These Halls]]</ref> The court also built [[Bastion of the Penitent]], which was later overtaken by the mursaat.<ref name="Preview"/> Whether the court abandoned the bastion or the mursaat took it from them remains unknown.

=== Early history ===
At an unknown time, Isgarren met the Elder Dragon [[Soo-Won]]. They respected each other and agreed not to interfere with each other. Soo-won kept the magic of Tyria balanced, while Isgarren and his court protected Tyria from invasions from the Mists.<ref>[[Records of the Deaths of the Elder Dragons]]</ref><ref name="Daisy">[[Drakologist Daisy]]</ref>

During the previous dragonrise, Isgarren rescued a [[Kryptis]] named [[Eparch]] who found himself in the [[Maguuma Jungle]] fleeing from [[Mordremoth]]. He took Eparch to the Wizard's Tower and taught him knowledge of Tyria, offering him the chance to join the court's rank. However, Isgarren eventually denied Eparch entry and banished him back to the demon realm [[Nayos]] after Eparch had torn a [[centaur]] village to innards and scraps of meat. This led to a rivalry spanning hundreds of years between Eparch and Isgarren as Eparch sought to return to Tyria and bring down Isgarren and his tower.<ref>[[Kryptis Memory (The Eleventh Hour)|Kryptis Memory]]</ref><ref name="StrengthoftheUnseen"/>

When [[Six Human Gods|the Six]] gave the [[Scepter of Orr]] to a pair of mortal rulers as a form of test, Isgarren thought to intervene but ultimately decided not to, as the court was still young and he did not want to draw the gods' ire.<ref name="Legavo">[[Archival Records: Legavo, the Binding of Wills]]</ref>

In 604 <small>AE</small>, Isgarren established the [[Astral Ward]] as protectors of Amnytas and the court, and named [[Taryn]] the first Warden.<ref>[[Foundation of the Astral Ward]]</ref>

Immediately after the foundation of the Astral Ward, Eparch invaded the Wizard's Tower with a full entourage, bringing with him the demon brothers [[Deimos]] and [[Cerus]]. They were pushed back through the combined strength of Isgarren, Mabon, Dagda and Astral Ward members, but not without severe casualties: Vass was killed by the brothers and Akeem died in battle as well.<ref name="Lonely Tower">[[Lonely Tower Fractal]]</ref>

At some point, the court started to conduct fractal-like simulations in the Mist to prepare for possible dire situations. Isgarren and Waiting Sorrow used their power to form the fractals together,<ref>[[Voices beyond the Veil]]</ref> and these islands were kept on an astral plane separated from reality.<ref name="MotherofStars">[[Mother of Stars]]</ref> The court used simulated lives in the fractals at first but switched to real people due to the simulation's inability to experience sufferings, lowering the predictive power of data collected. When a simulation ended, the court would pause the fractal and froze it in time.<ref>[[Director Camillus]]</ref>

Sometime after 716 <small>AE</small>,<ref>[[Waiting Sorrow]]</ref> Waiting Sorrow departed the court with all her power intact.<ref name="DagdasJournal">[[Dagda's Diary]]</ref> Before her departure, she crafted the [[Heart of the Obscure]], a device capable of locating and sealing rifts from the mist via channeling the user's emotions. She left the device in her quarters, where it remained untouched until the modern era.<ref name="MotherofStars"/>

During [[Palawa Joko]]'s conquest of [[Elona]], the court aided [[Turai Ossa]]'s campaign against Joko by providing him the spell necessary to trap the lich's soul.<ref>[[Turai's Journal]]</ref>

=== ''[[Guild Wars]]'' ===
When [[Vizier Khilbron]] was found using the Scepter of Orr to open the [[gww:Door of Komalie|Door of Komalie]], the court thought to intervene. Before they could act, however, the Vizier was slain by [[Hero (NPC)|heroes]] of the time, and the scepter transported away by the lich's final whispers.<ref name="Legavo"/>

During [[Nightfall]], the court sent Astral Ward members to investigate but chose to withdraw after [[Abaddon]]'s manipulation behind the events was revealed. This was due to the Court not wishing to get involved with quandaries of the gods.<ref name="HeavyBook"/>

Sometime between 1000 <small>AE</small> and 1100 <small>AE</small>, the court sent Mabon to set up a warding enchantment around [[Janthir]], due to reasons only known to members of the Court.<ref name="HeavyBook"/>. This enchantment prevented access to the city of the mursaat, [[Bava Nisos]], until 1336 <small>AE</small>.

Shortly before the [[transformation of the Dwarves]] in 1078 <small>AE</small>,<ref name="Letter from Lyhr">[[Letter from Lyhr]]</ref> Mabon went to [[Droknar's Forge]] and found a [[dwarf]] named [[Lyhr]] who had the ability to spilt himself into two facets to join the Astral Ward.<ref>[[Collect essence to maintain Droknar's Forge]]</ref> Lyhr would eventually ascend to join the Court, becoming the leading wizard of [[Bastion of Balance]].

=== Interim years ===
In 1127 <small>AE</small>, the court sent Dagda and Lyhr on an errand involving getting relics from the [[Durmand Priory]] and Sparks of Deldrimor from [[Rune-Locked Doors|the dwarven mine]] in [[Derelict Delve]]. These items were transmuted into a silvery mercurial form trapped in a prism-shaped capsule by Dagda at Droknar's Forge. While she was performing the ritual, Lyhr saw visions of the past, though what he saw remains unknown.<ref>[[Journal (Lyhr)|Lyhr's Journal]]</ref>

The court initially kept their distance from the newborn race, the [[sylvari]], when they first appeared in 1302 <small>AE</small>, but started to admit them into the Astral Ward when the sylvari [[Narcisse]] bypassed the magic defenses of the Beacon of Ages in 1316 <small>AE</small>. When [[Mordremoth]]'s call started to affect sylvari in 1328 <small>AE</small>, the court enchanted the magical defense around Amnytas to sever the dragon's connection with sylvari Astral Ward members.<ref>[[On the Introduction of Sylvari to the Astral Ward]]</ref>

After the death of Mordremoth, Mabon and an Astral Ward member named [[Uenno]] recruited the former [[Destiny's Edge]] member [[Zojja]] who was on a journey to find herself and heal her trauma into the Astral Ward. The court saw that there were flames inside her, and Mabon took Zojja as his apprentice.

=== [[Guild Wars 2: Secrets of the Obscure|Secrets of the Obscure]] ===
[[Soo-Won]]'s death in 1335 <small>AE</small> fractured Tyria's magic ecosystem, damaging the spire and the beacons. The shield between Tyria and the Mist was broken as a consequence, and some of the fractals the court created spilled out into reality, forming the [[Skywatch Archipelago]]. Isgarren held things together long enough for Aurene to take over, but the [[Kryptis]] still managed to breach into Tyria.<ref name="Daisy"/>

The court gathered near the newly formed landscape to discuss the situation and prepare for the Kryptis attack. They had different ideas on whether to seek aid or not, and several members of the court started to show signs of being possessed as time went by.<ref>[[Zojja's Journal]]</ref>

In 1336 <small>AE</small>, the Kryptis took over several bastions in Amnytas and the Wizard's Tower. Without the tower, the court was unable to access Amnytas and was forced to stay in the Skywatch Archipelago. The Kryptis breached into the [[Beacon of Ages]] soon after, possessing two of the wizards and forcing Lyhr to split himself in order to stop being fully possessed. Fortunately, Mabon, members of the Astral Ward and the Pact Commander who got pulled into Nayos and was rescued by Mabon and Zojja [[Hell Breaks Loose|arrived the scene]], repelling the Kryptis from the Beacon of Ages.

The remaining wizards set their eyes on unlocking the Wizard's Tower and cleansing possessed members of the court. With the help of the commander, the court successfully [[Mother of Stars|purged Dagda of her possession]] as well as [[Unlocking the Wizard's Tower|forging a key]] into the Wizard's Tower. After [[The Missing Facet|cleansing Lyhr's other half]] and [[Tower of Secrets|clearing the tower]], the court bestowed the title [[Wayfinder]] to the commander for their help before Mabon leaving for Amnytas in search of Isgarren.

The situation became dire after the remaining wizard arrived at [[Amnytas]]. Mabon, showing signs of being possessed back in the Wizard's Tower, was sighted by Astral Ward members and was not well. After locating him as the [[Bastion of Strength]], it was revealed that Mabon had been possessed by a Kryptis who linked its life with the wizard's, forcing the wayfinder and Zojja to [[Mabon's Fate|sacrifice him]].

The court spent little time mourning as Isgarren was sighted in the [[Bastion of the Celestial]]. Joined by Astral Ward members and the wayfinder, the remaining wizards [[The World Spire (story)|chased]] Isgarren up to the apex of the World Spire, trying to expel the demon invading his mind. But before they could complete the ritual, Isgarren and the wayfinder was pulled into Nayos via a rift.

Within Nayos, the wayfinder and Isgarren faced the demon that had possessed the wizard's consciousness: [[Cerus]], Glaive of House Nephus. Having been gravely injured, Isgarren gave his energy to the wayfinder. With this energy and the rebelling Kryptis lord [[Peitha]]'s help, the wayfinder [[Treachery|defeated]] Cerus and returned to the Wizard's Tower with Isgarren and Peitha.

Back in the tower, a quick exchange happened between Isgarren and Peitha before it was decided that Isgarren would send the Astral Ward to help Peitha kill Eparch and usurp the throne. At the same time, Zojja, who had been given the choice after Mabon's death, finally decided that she would be ascending and joining the court. The ritual would be held in the following days.

The court started to send Astral Ward through as planned a few weeks later, helping Peitha and her forces gain a footing in Nayos. The court continued suppling the war effort as the battle raged on, and when the rebel army [[Into the Spider's Lair|approached]] Eparch's citadel [[Zakiros]], the court sent Dagda and Zojja into Nayos to help with the battle.

During the [[The Eleventh Hour|final confrontation]] between Eparch and Peitha's forces, the king managed to freeze everyone against him. But before he could claim victory, Isgarren stepped through a portal and joined the fight. With the combined strength of Peitha, Isgarren and the wayfinder, Eparch was defeated and his magic released back to Nayos.

Following Eparch's death, the court and Peitha [[Sovereign of Nayos|signed a treaty]], proclaiming Peitha as the legitimate ruler of Nayos and amnesty to the Kryptis in exchange for the Astral Ward's presence in Nayos and prohibition for Kryptis entering Tyria unless invited. After the treaty had been signed, Zojja expressed her desire to explore the Mist in the future.

=== [[Guild Wars 2: Janthir Wilds|Janthir Wilds]] ===
When the Tyria leaders [[Prologue: The Tyrian Alliance|formed]] the [[Tyrian Alliance]] in response to the Kryptis attack in 1337 <small>AE</small>, the court decided to reveal themselves to the Tyrian society, sending Isgarren and Warden [[Frode]] of the Astral Ward as representatives.

During the first summit of the alliance, Isgarren and Frode suggested venturing into [[Janthir]] to ally with the [[Lowland Kodan]] and provided [[Moon Camp Covert|Moon Camp]] as a footing. Frode later revealed the other reason for their suggestion to the wayfinder: They suspected that the missing wizard [[Waiting Sorrow]] was hiding among the Lowland Kodan.

With the quest of making allies and finding the missing wizard, the wayfinder [[Unknown Territory|made their way]] to Janthir along with delegates from the Tyria Alliance. They met the Lowland Kodan shortly after their arrival and [[Missing in Action|found]] that [[titan]]s were a problem on Janthir. When [[Strangers among Lands|discussing their measures]] to take against the titans, Isgarren voted to used the [[Scepter of Orr]], but ultimately the alliance voted against it and the scepter was not used.

During [[Strangers among Lands|the fights against the titans]], it was revealed that the Kodan village's healing master [[Fading Aurora]] was in fact Waiting Sorrow.

After the titans [[Against the Wall|temporarily retreated]] from Janthir, the wayfinder [[Sorrow in These Halls|brought Waiting Sorrow back]] to the Wizard's Tower. The wizards met, and harsh words were exchanged before Waiting Sorrow dropped her tone and spoke about the titan crisis happening on Janthir. The court then proceeded to have a secret conversation on the subject.

During the wayfinder's time in Janthir, the court decided to send Lyhr to stand in for Isgarren in the alliance.<ref name="Letter from Lyhr" />

[[Revenant]] is a [[profession]] able to channel the power of [[the Mists]] through [[Legend]]s, their [[profession mechanic]]. The profession is only available to players who have purchased any of the Elder Dragon Saga [[expansion]]s: ''[[Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns|Heart of Thorns]]'', ''[[Guild Wars 2: Path of Fire|Path of Fire]]'' or ''[[Guild Wars 2: End of Dragons|End of Dragons]]''.<ref>[https://www.guildwars2.com/en/news/guild-wars-2-elder-dragon-saga-expansion-sale/ Guild Wars 2 Elder Dragon Saga Expansion Sale], Guildwars2.com
:"Each expansion includes nine new specializations and access to the revenant profession. Don’t miss out on these amazing discounts—Tyria awaits you!"</ref><ref>[https://help.guildwars2.com/hc/en-us/articles/230165307-Account-types-Free-Core-HoT Guild Wars 2 Account Types: Free, Core, HoT & PoF], Guildwars2.com</ref> They commune with echoes of legendary heroes and villains from [[Tyria (world)|Tyria’s]] past, which aid them in battle. Revenants commune with two legends, channeling only one at a time, swapping between the two while in combat. Additionally, revenant skills cost [[energy]], a resource that replenishes over time or when switching legends. As a [[soldier]] profession, revenants wear heavy [[armor]]. With certain [[expansion]]s, revenants get access to [[Specialization#Revenant|elite specializations]]:

With the {{HoT}} ''[[Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns|Heart of Thorns]]'' expansion, revenants can choose to become {{herald}} [[herald]]s, communing with the legendary [[dragon]] champion [[Glint]] through the [[Legendary Dragon Stance]] to provide [[boon]]s to nearby allies by using [[facet]]s.

With the {{PoF}} ''[[Guild Wars 2: Path of Fire|Path of Fire]]'' expansion, revenants can choose to become {{renegade}} [[renegade]]s, communing with the legendary [[charr]] [[Kalla Scorchrazor]] through the [[Legendary Renegade Stance]], summoning from the Mists echoes of her [[Legendary Renegade]] [[warband]] members to attack foes and empower allies.

With the {{EoD}} ''[[Guild Wars 2: End of Dragons|End of Dragons]]'' expansion, revenants can choose to become {{vindicator}} [[vindicator]]s, communing with the legendary [[Cantha]]n heroes [[Saint Viktor]] and [[Archemorus]] at the same time through one [[Legendary Alliance Stance]]. With [[Legendary Alliance]] skills, Saint Viktor provides healing and support, while Archemorus goes all-in on the offensive. Additionally, their dodge is greatly modified as a leap skill that either damages enemies or aids allies.

With the {{VoE}} ''[[Guild Wars 2: Visions of Eternity|Visions of Eternity]]'' expansion, revenants can choose to become {{conduit}} [[conduit]]s, communing with the legendary Mists-born being [[Razah]] and their [[Legendary Entity]] skills, empowering and elevating their bond with their second legend through Razah's boundless [[Cosmic Wisdom]], deepening the bond between the revenant's two legends.

== Abilities ==
[[File:Revenant The Master of the Mists 002 Revenant UI 2.jpg|thumb|500px|[[Graphical user interface|UI]] animation of revenant entering [[Legendary Demon Stance]]. Out of [[combat mode]], revenant is limited to 50% energy.]]
=== Profession mechanic ===
Revenants can channel the Mists to invoke the powers of certain [[Legend|legendary figures]] of the past.

==== Energy ====
Revenants use a resource called [[energy]], which regenerates over time. Activating skills uses energy, some even cause energy degeneration while active, making energy management critical for gameplay.

==== Legends ====
The revenant can have two [[legend]]ary stances equipped, and of these only one can be active at any given time. As well as [[weapon swap]]ping they can swap between channeling two legends. Channeling replaces the last five skill slots on the skill bar, depending on the current legend: the [[healing skill]], three [[utility skill]]s, and the [[elite skill]]. Revenant traits tend to synergize with the skill set, similar to a [[skill]] type.<ref>[http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2015-01-29-guild-wars-2-heart-of-thorns-expansion-level-cap-gear-tier PAX South presentation analysis in www.eurogamer.net]</ref>

When channeling a legend, the interface changes slightly to reflect the legend channeled. For instance, when channeling Jalis, ice spikes are seen behind the utility skills, while when channeling Ventari, yellow leaves can be seen.
=== Skills ===
{{Main|List of revenant skills}}

==== Skill types ====
Due to the unique nature of the Revenant's mechanics, Revenant skills are classified according to their Legend. Thus, each Legend is also a unique skill type. See the above [[#Legends|Legends]] section for more details.

This mechanic also results in Revenants '''not''' having access to Common and [[Racial Skills]].

=== Specializations ===
Revenants have five core specializations, and four elite specializations:

==== Core ====
: {{trait icon|Corruption (specialization)|size=35}} — Associated with [[Legendary Demon Stance]]. Focuses on [[Invoke Torment|invoking torment]], improving damaging conditions, and gaining [[resistance]].
: {{trait icon|Retribution (specialization)|size=35}} — Associated with [[Legendary Dwarf Stance]]. Focuses on reducing incoming damage, [[endurance]] recovery, and inflicting [[weakness]]. May enhance [[dodge|dodging]].
: {{trait icon|Salvation|size=35}} — Associated with [[Legendary Centaur Stance]]. Focuses on [[healing]] and removing [[condition]]s.
: {{trait icon|Invocation|size=35}} — Focuses on invoking legends and improving [[fury]].
: {{trait icon|Devastation|size=35}} — Associated with [[Legendary Assassin Stance]]. Focuses on increasing [[damage|outgoing damage]] and [[Battle Scars|stealing health]], and improving dual-wielding.

==== Elite ====
: {{trait icon|Herald|size=35}} — Gain access to [[Herald#Weapon skills|shield]]s, the [[Legendary Dragon Stance]], and replaces [[Ancient Echo]] with [[Facet of Nature]] which provides a passive to allies that changes based on your current legend.
: {{trait icon|Renegade|size=35}} — Gain access to [[Renegade#Weapon skills|short bow]]s, the [[Legendary Renegade Stance]], and replaces Ancient Echo with [[Citadel Order]]s. Citadel Orders provide boons to allies or rain artillery on your enemies.
: {{trait icon|Vindicator|size=35}} — Gain access to [[Vindicator#Weapon skills|greatsword]]s, the [[Legendary Alliance Stance]], replaces [[dodge]] with a [[Tenacious Ruin|powerful blow from above]], and replaces Ancient Echo with [[Energy Meld]], which restores endurance.
: {{trait icon|Conduit|size=35}} — Channel Razah via the [[Legendary Entity Stance]], replaces Ancient Echo with [[Cosmic Wisdom]] while also gaining access to [[Release Potential]].

== Personal story ==
In the [[Biography#Revenant|biography]] step of [[character creation]], revenants must decide which blindfold they wear to shut out their physical world interaction. This choice is merely cosmetic and determines their starting head armor, which can be hidden or transmuted after character creation.
== Lore ==
Revenant is by far the newest profession in [[Tyria (world)|Tyria]], having been introduced to the world by [[Rytlock Brimstone]] in 1328 <small>AE</small>, who in turn learned it from [[Glint]] while searching [[the Mists]] for the lost sword [[Sohothin]].<ref>[[Crystalline Memories]]
:'''Rytlock Brimstone:''' I also met Glint. She taught me the ways of the revenant.</ref> Revenants are soldiers who have learned to commune with the Mists, a magical protoreality that makes up the fabric of space and time. The Mists remember what came before, and echoes of those who left an especially powerful imprint on the world of Tyria can still be found there—revenants call upon these legendary historical figures,<ref name="Hidden Arcana">[https://www.guildwars2.com/en/news/hidden-arcana-role-playing-the-revenant/ Hidden Arcana: Role-Playing the Revenant], Guildwars2.com</ref> both heroic and villainous, bringing them into action to enhance the revenant's own abilities and power. As with other professions, anyone can learn and become a revenant—what is needed is the knowledge of the profession, the faith and will to reach into the Mists, and also an open mind.<ref name="Hidden Arcana" />

As the legends invoked by revenants are not the actual persons, but rather Mist-echoes of them, the legends don’t necessarily have the full range of memories, knowledge & thoughts as the original person,<ref>[https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/lore/Lore-Q-A/page/1#post6173721 Post by Scott McGough] in "Lore Q&A", Old Guild Wars 2 Forums (Archived)</ref> but they are still sentient, with opinions and personalities of their own.<ref name="Hidden Arcana" /> As echoes, the invoked legends are often of a deceased person, but invoking a person who is still alive, or considered active (as was the case of the revenant [[Commander]] channeling the [[undead]] [[lich]] [[Palawa Joko]])<ref>[[Legendary Prisoner Stance]]</ref> is not unheard of either, with [[Razah]], a mysterious entity and a denizen of the Mists, being confirmed the first living legend channeled.<ref name="Final 3">[https://www.guildwars2.com/en/news/the-final-three-elite-specializations-elementalist-engineer-revenant/ The Final Three Elite Specializations: Elementalist, Engineer, Revenant], Guildwars2.com</ref> Not every echo is thrilled about being invoked, such as [[gww:Mallyx|Mallyx]], who is offended at having his immense power being borrowed by upstart mortals.<ref name="Hidden Arcana" /> Much like the [[Cantha]]n [[ritualist]]s, revenants often blindfold themselves to aid their focus in communing with the legends, who are able to perceive the world through their own senses.<ref name="Hidden Arcana" /><ref>Biography section</ref>
== Notes ==
* Revenants cannot use [[racial skills]].
* Revenants were originally unable to [[weapon swap]], like [[elementalist]]s and [[engineer]]s; however this was changed following player feedback.<ref>[https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/professions/revenant/Revenant-Changes/first#post5291406 Forum post by Roy Cronacher]</ref>
* Before the [[Game updates/2018-05-08|May 8th, 2018]] patch, Revenants could only use spears underwater despite having two underwater weapon slots. They similarly only had two Legends usable underwater: Assassin and Demon. With the May 8th patch, they can use tridents and the Legendary Dwarf Stance underwater.
* As of the [[Game updates/2017-08-08|August 8th, 2017]] patch, you can have idle conversations with the channeled legends. See each legend's individual page for dialogue.

== Trivia ==
* During development, revenants were named "reckoners". <ref>[https://youtu.be/pGvprRNgwm0?t=1040 Design Deconstructed: Episode 4 - Prisoners of the Dragon by Matthew Medina]</ref>
* In folklore, a [[w:Revenant|revenant]] is someone who returns from a long absence, often from death or in a supernatural way.
* A few elements of the revenant's unique mechanics stem from ''[[Guild Wars]]'' mechanics, such as [[gw1:energy|energy]] and [[gw1:Upkeep|upkeep]].
* Revenant shares many similarities with the [[gww:Guild Wars Factions|Guild Wars Factions]] profession [[gww:Ritualist|Ritualist]], including the use of blindfolds and similarity of their profession symbol.
* The Revenant's icon resembles a "third eye", and symbolizes enlightenment. <ref>[https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/professions/revenant/Revenant-s-profession-icon/first#post5394742 Forum post by Roy Cronacher]</ref>
* Revenants and engineers are the only base professions without access to [[signet]]s. However, [[Herald]] [[Legendary Dragon Stance|Facets]] expand upon the concept, featuring similar passive ([[upkeep]]) and active (consume) interactions, as well as having very similar skill icon artwork. In that way, herald can be considered a 5-signet Revenant.
* Every Revenant's legend has at least one skill which has an upkeep.
* During [[The Hero of Istan]] story instance, Revenants can channel the [[Legendary Prisoner Stance|Legendary Prisoner]] [[Palawa Joko]].
* The main revenant concept art and art for its elite specializations feature a male [[sylvari]].
** In the revenant concept art, the revenant wears the [[Mistward armor]].
:'''Petrus Dawnwelder:''' But things are looking up. Efram, Mia, and [[Crecia Stoneglow|Crecia]] are making moves. Seeing them act together is good. [[Malice Swordshadow|Malice]], too.
:'''Petrus Dawnwelder:''' That's why you were called. The Iron and Flame Legions made something that we'd like to share with you. As a fellow guardian.
:'''Petrus Dawnwelder:''' Iron created a torch for us to wield in battle—that torch emanates a radiant flame, reclaimed by the Flame Legion.
:'''Petrus Dawnwelder:''' Those of us who wield this torch call ourselves luminaries.
:'''Twikk:''' Backing up. I am a professor at the College of Dynamics. I lead a research [[krewe]] on biological morphism.
:'''Twikk:''' I was recently awarded the [[Snaff Prize]] for my efforts. Buzzworthy, for a krewe outside the [[College of Synergetics|Synergetics]] umbrella.
:'''Twikk:''' My research started with a dream to enhance the body in battle without [[Golemancer|golemancy]]. A poignant need for the diminutive...
:'''Twikk:''' Thus, my mercurial mold was born! It's a subspecies of ooze. I wanted to use it to enhance our armor and weapons.
:'''Twikk:''' But when one of my lab assistants tripped into the holding chamber, the mercurial mold immediately adapted to his body.
:'''Twikk:''' It shielded him. It protected him. Through a series of tests, it proved as valuable to lab work as it did to battle.
:'''Twikk:''' And I think you'd be an excellent test subject. Allow me to attune your microbial biology with one of the oozes.
:'''Twikk:''' It won't sting. Much. Well, maybe a slight burning sensation.
Commander!

I'm happy to write that we've made healthy strides in assisting the [[Spirits of the Wild|spirits]] with their [[Champion's End|recovery]]. Despite our best efforts, I suspect they've a ways to go. The Great Spirits have been slow to stir, but they are—slowly, like [[Sigfast|my brother]] after a month's worth of revelry. As for the [[Lost Spirits' Hallow|corrupted]], well, grief can manifest as thick, bone-chilling fog; some may never be wholly free of it, but at the very least, we can help light the way out.

To help them connect once again with Tyria, one of our shamans would like to meet with you in [[Hoelbrak]]. There's an ancient tradition among our people that has been seldom shared, and being a keen [[elementalist]] yourself, we wish to share that with you now. Perhaps with this knowledge you can help us guide the spirits out of the fog. Or at least help them stretch their legs a little.
;Meeting Vesna Torgsdottir in Hoelbrak
:'''Vesna Torgsdottir:''' Welcome, Commander. It is an honor to host you.
:'''Torvi:''' (chirps)
:'''<Character name>:''' And who might this be?
:'''Vesna Torgsdottir:''' This is Torvi. Actually, she's what I'd like to discuss with you.
:'''Vesna Torgsdottir:''' I am an [[evoker]]. An elementalist, just like you. We listen to the Spirits and conjure creatures from their realm.
:'''Vesna Torgsdottir:''' Creatures much like Torvi here. By harnessing the elements into the combined essence of a being, the Spirits walk with us.
:'''<Character name>:''' Curious! I've never heard of this practice.
:'''Vesna Torgsdottir:''' Evocation is an honored but very secretive tradition among the norn. Only a select few were able to wield this power until now.
:'''Vesna Torgsdottir:''' The Tyrian Alliance has been a great help in Hoelbrak's healing, so we've decided that it's time to share these abilities.
:'''Vesna Torgsdottir:''' Thus, I would love to teach you, Commander.
:'''Torvi:''' (chirps)
:'''Vesna Torgsdottir:''' Yes. This is also our way of helping the Spirits. They are healing and yearn to connect with the world again.

;Talking to Vesna
:For so long, we evokers hid our abilities out of fear that the spirits would be compromised... But now our craft may be a catalyst for their healing.
:{{dialogue icon|more}} ''I would love to learn more about your craft.''
::Evokers are powerful elementalists that summon lesser spirits granted by their major counterparts. Torvi here is my best companion... And by showing her the world, I can help the spirits reach even further than before.
::{{dialogue icon|end}} ''I hope that sharing this practice brings the spirits even more peace.''
Dear Commander,

One of our [[secondborn]], [[Cillian]], has recently returned from their travels across [[Tyria]] and is quite eager to meet with you. Nothing too serious, mind, but they wished to consult with a storied and celebrated [[mesmer]], and they could imagine no one better. :'''Cillian:''' A work in progress. I just returned from a long journey. I'm putting my tales together. Those I witnessed, those I've heard.
:'''Cillian:''' Name's Cillian. I am a dreamer—a storyteller. I am a troubadour! And a mesmer, just like you.
:'''Cillian:''' I suppose that's why you're here, to weave your own tales.
:'''Cillian:''' A good story can bolster your allies or threaten your enemies. In battle and out.
:'''Cillian:''' But the stories you could tell, my goodness. You'll put me to shame, you will. How am I supposed to guide you? The commander?
:"Her fangs were out; her blade was sharp ... Vengeance stirred within her heart... " No, maybe not that one... Oh, my! I didn't see you there. Lost in my own tale...
::{{dialogue icon|more}} ''I do love a good story.''
:'''Sang-Mi:''' She feels that we should put forth a "genuine" effort to share more of our culture with our Tyrian cousins.
:'''Sang-Mi:''' Anyway... I've heard of your necromantic prowess, so I suppose you are at least a competent candidate.
:'''Sang-Mi:''' The art of the ritualist is a long-cherished tradition of my people. It's one of Cantha's oldest customs.
:'''Sang-Mi:''' Ritualists are adept spirit callers. We beckon ethereal entities from he Mists into battle. They help us and we respect them.
:'''Sang-Mi:''' I will show you, but I hope you absorb quickly...

;Talking to Sang-Mi
:Ritualism is one of Cantha's oldest traditions, so I implore you to explore it with respect. A wise master taught my ancestor at the Shing Jea Monastery. My family has carried those teachings for generations.
:{{dialogue icon|more}} ''I'd love to learn more.''
::Even before the gods gifted us with magic, ritualists channeled spirits from the Mists to aid them. So long as you respect the spirits, they will respect you—protect you. They will smite those who wrong you.
::{{dialogue icon|end}} ''Fascinating!''
:'''Sayida the Sly:''' Eh, bought myself a seat on the Captain's council. Thought it was time I flexed my political artistry. Maybe make a coin or two?
:'''Sayida the Sly:''' Well, technically [[Captain Peter the Lost|Peter]] gave me his seat. And I replaced the [[Capricorn]] for him. A win-win. The boy needed some sea air.
:'''<Character name>:''' I bet [[Evon Gnashblade|Gnashblade]] has thoughts...
:'''Sayida the Sly:''' Nothing is official, but Gnashblade'll be the first name on the ballot. Rumors about a Canthan candidate too. Some [[Chul-Moo|gang leader]].
:'''Sayida the Sly:''' But now I have a nose in all of Lion's Arch's business—it's seafaring business, anyway. That's why Lawson called for you.
:'''Sayida the Sly:''' The ships joined with three other Inquest vessels to the south. And then the whole fleet departed shortly after.
:'''Sayida the Sly:''' I don't trust those miscreants as far as I can throw them. Not after what we witnessed in the isles.
Kiel wrote to update me on the latest in Lion's Arch. Given recent events, things are pretty busy in Sanctum Harbor—there's been a lot of movement in and out of the city these days.
I received a mysteriously urgent letter from Commodore Lawson, summoning me to Lion's Arch to meet with him.

<nowiki>***</nowiki>

When I got to Lion's Arch, I was greeted by the sounds of a scuffle in the alley. Sayida's Sly Crew was at odds with Magnus's. Sayida quickly took command of the situation and sent the opposing crew on their way.

As we caught up, Sayida revealed that she'd taken—by questionable means—a seat on the Captain's Council. While watching the docks ahead of an alliance trade deal, her crew witnessed some unscheduled departures, all manned by the Inquest. Her technician lost the signal before they could learn anything meaningful.

While Sayida scolded her crew for the scuffle earlier, she directed me towards Canach and Lawson. Canach was enamored with the recent ship purchase and seemingly unbothered by the Inquest situation, but Lawson shared Sayida's discomfort. No one wants to see an organization like that moving en masse.

While we waited for Sayida, I called Councillor Ludo to see if she knew anything. She was similarly distraught by the revelation, expressing concern that something sinister may be at play. She suggested that I meet with her in Rata Sum, so Sayida and I are headed to Maguuma.
