{{Book text|By: Captain Ivan

What makes a man, or mole? Ivan has pondered this much after his misadventures in Cantha. I've seen fantastical places, done battle with impossible beasts, stared my own reflections in the face, and lost the person I cared for most, but in turn, I've gained new perspective, new purpose, and new friends to support me in this new chapter. Perhaps the last kindness my former captain gifted me.

Ivan had not always known this kindness. Life in the moletariate was not the ideological paradise I was raised to believe. Instead of unified collective action to benefit the vulnerable, opportunists clawed for support and power over and over, only to change their tune afterward. Which isn't to say we didn't have our successes, but as I grew older, I saw our movement was as much born of hatred as it was liberation and communion. Hatred for our ancient Stone Summit taskmasters boiled over into hatred for all dwarves and then outsiders of all kinds before turning inward toward our own people.

I hold most of the movement's core tenets close to my mind and heart; it's what led me to the Aetherblades. Ivan longed, I craved for community again. Family. I was fortunate that they had use for my skills, skeptical as they were at first. A dredge navigator and a good one at that. They had their laughs now and then, but they were singing a different tune after I steered them clear of Kralkatorrik's rampage through the Mists.

The Mists changed many of us, some for the worse. Afterward, Cantha felt like a potential fresh start, but many of our crews had other plans. Somehow, I'd stumbled goggles-first into the custody of one of our old foes from the Scarlet days. The famed Pact Commander: the storied slayer of dragons, gods, liches; you name it, they've probably killed it. Ivan thought "this is it; this is the end of the line." Ivan was wrong.}}
{{Book text|Draconology in a New Cycle
By: Explorer Kurt Bengtsson

The more personal facets of Tyria's dragonkind have long been wrapped in mystery. In my brief conversations with the Elder Prismatic Dragon, Aurene—shortly after the Dragonvoid crisis in Cantha—she admitted that despite her ascension, she was only a couple years short of a decade. With her consent, I was allowed to ask some more personal questions.

Launching right into the thick of it, I asked Aurene whether she and her brother Vlast were part of Glint's only clutch of eggs. Despite the memories imprinted by the time of her hatching or later uncovered by her gleaning of the Scrying Pool, Aurene was ultimately unsure. Historical records of encounters with Glint allude to her having had more than two eggs; what happened to the rest of them has been lost to the annals of history. But as Forgotten and Exalted records denote, Glint's clutch was created and protected for the purpose of eventually deposing and replacing the Elder Dragons, (Taimi, 27). Aurene found this detail poignant as she described her brief and final conversations with Soo-Won, and the regret she'd expressed with regards to their raising, having created the other Elder Dragons as tools to serve some cosmic purpose without much thought to how that would affect them, and how they would later connect (or not) with other living beings.

There has been much discourse over whether all dragons can create their own eggs and then suffuse them with enough magic for a hatchling to form. All experts in the field agree, Elder Dragons and their direct offspring are seemingly set apart from the rest of dragonkind, all possessing the ability to shape and create life with power to outmatch the human gods. That Glint was freed by the Forgotten and then able to sow the seeds of her elder family's downfall was nothing short of a miracle.

The specifics of elder dragon parentage are still conjecture at best, though. By Aurene's account, her grandsire expressed some amount of remorse for having killed her and possibly her mother. It's unclear if Kralkatorrik was driven entirely by the early coalescing effects of the Dragonvoid or if he was also guided by visions of his own, always knowing he and his offspring would have to die for Aurene to ascend. What is most interesting is that Kralkatorrik's capacity for empathy, connection, and resonance—albeit rudimentary and corruptible—was a consistent throughline from Soo-Won down to his own offspring, something not witnessed in his siblings (Taimi, 53).}}
{{Book text|The Flamebearer
Since ancient days, before the previous dragonrise, the Flamebearer was a symbol of resilience against the harsh elements from the Far Shiverpeaks to the bitter northlands even further. Its significance grew in the times of Jormag's unrest. For most lowland folk, its deeper meaning is a vestige of our past connection to our people's namesake. For the highlanders, the flame is deeply connected to their faith in Koda. His "Blessing of Flame" holds special significance to them. It can be seen from midwinter through early spring.

The Spearhead
Poised and true. Its guiding star always pointing us toward new adventures and challenges. One of the first constellations traced by our clan after our split from the highlanders. In more recent history, it has become most emblematic of our people's mastery of the spear as both a tool and a weapon. It can be seen from midsummer through early autumn.

The Hammer
Another shared constellation. Representative of craft and the virtue of honest and challenging work. Both highland and lowland bearkin take great pride in their crafts, seeking mastery in talents recognized, in paths chosen. Regardless of time or talent, all must temper and shape their skills in the forge to reach such heights. It can be seen in the late spring through midsummer.

The Fisher
A symbol of our connection to the land and sea. A constant reminder of what we owe the natural world and the sustenance it provides. It can be seen in the night sky from late autumn through midwinter, correlating with migration of several species of fish to the headwaters.}}
Quivering Warmth jammed the tip of her spear into the training dummy, almost yelling out in frustration in the process. It felt good to work out some of her anger. And she had a lot to be angry about, with her ex-boyfriend Devious Weasel trying to get her in trouble with the local Claw.

And then there was that strange newcomer, Rigid Branch... She gripped tighter onto the length of the spear shaft, thinking of those big paws of his. All of these other bearkin sent her into torpor, but that one...

A spear whipped past her, planting itself into the dummy's head and snapping her out of her thoughts. She looked back to see Rigid Branch approaching, holding another spear in his hand already. "Wow," she thought, staring at it. "That's the biggest spear I've ever seen. Is that why they call him Rigid Branch?"

Quivering Warmth remained frozen, overwhelmed by the moment, as Rigid Branch came over and pulled out the embedded spear. "Already in torpor you are," he teased. She shook her head at him, flustered.

"You'll never get the job done, gripping it like that," he continued, his paws touching hers. He loosened her grip, transferring her paws over to the longer spear. He stood behind her, setting her feet, showing her how to position for maximum effectiveness.

As his big strong paws wrapped around hers, she couldn't help but wonder if there might be a different reason they called him Rigid Branch.

* Eighth day of the Springtime Current, my twenty-third waymark: Joined peat gathering today. One of the other teams came rushing toward us with clammy fur. Apparently they heard whispers beneath the murk. Rattled enough that we called off the harvest until tomorrow's first light.

* Second day of the Crimson Horizon, my twenty-third waymark: Caught a glimpse of what looked like a golden wolf during my hunt this morning. Chased it as far south as I was comfortable treading, but I lost sight of it. More observation needed, but I'm keen on calling it the "golden howler."

* Eighteenth day of the Bitter Wind, my twenty-fourth waymark: I saw it just across the clearing... Part troll, part crow. Talons the size of a cub. Flew off before I could pursue. I'm calling it the "crow-footed skulker."

* Twenty-first day of the Springtime Current, my thirty-third waymark: Whispers of a four-legged creature with long, eel-like hair wandering through the shallow parts of the bay. No sightings myself, but I promptly called it the "eel-haired lurker."

* Tenth day of the Burning Sun, my thirty-fifth waymark: The crow-footed skulker has returned! This time in the uplands. Shocked that the journeykin didn't chase it away.

* Twelfth day of the Burning Sun, my thirty-fifth waymark: The village shoreline is covered in large, thick feathers the color of a starless sky. Not valravn. Whatever these came from is much larger.

* Twelfth day of the Burning Sun, my thirty-fifth waymark: Stirred awake by strange scraping sounds on top of my homestead. Walked from one end of the roof to the other. Could this be the skulker again?}}
A bookmark pulls you to a passage midway through the volume. You wonder who was reading it last.

Following Marron's failed attempts to breach the tower walls, a great many were inspired to do the same—the cult of Verata being a primary suspect for nearly a decade's time. Just before Isgarren and Zeak, the present Warden of the Astral Ward, were reading to move the tower from its slumber in Kessex back to the bounds of Amnytas (which was fixed across the ocean, far to the north at the time), a small splinter group of more or less corrupt necromancers led by Verata himself managed to ascend the exterior wall. Only a handful of the ward were present at the time, but, under Isgarren's orders, went into hiding while Isgarren and Zeak set an elaborate trap.

Isgarren, disguised as a young human boy, guided Verata and his cultists through the halls of the tower in the form of a chase. Most of the doors were locked, limiting their pursuit. They cornered him in the Hall of Confluence, but before they could capture the fleeing boy, Isgarren offered the many treasures of his master. Verata balked at the notion, demanding to be told more of the tower's secrets. Where did it come from? Who was this "master"?

As they interrogated Isgarren, one of the necromancers stepped a little too close to one of the cosmic gateways in the chamber. Isgarren begged them not to get too near, lest they unravel the truth behind the Wizard's Tower. Verata, being much too eager to see through Isgarren's games, guided the young boy to step through first so they could follow. He did, and while Isgarren was safely deposited in another section of the Wizard's Tower, Verata and his cultlings were dropped straight into the ocean. It took them hours, swimming from island to island, to make it back to the coast.
